Product Review: Panoptx Convertible Sunglasses

By Dan Kibler

Panoptx Convertibles - Functional and Cool!

Liz and I have been testing the latest model Panoptx Windless Eyewear called the Convertible. They are our favorites for both form and function. The first impression is that they look great—very up-to-date. We've both been complemented on how they look on us. The chrome frame (also in black, red and tortoise) is quite cool. If we look good in them, just think how great you'll look! I previously reviewed Panoptx Windless Eyewear last winter. Check that article for more background.

Like all Panoptx, the Convertible features the OSS, Ocular Surround System, designed to eliminate wind-induced tearing. The OSS is a fabric-covered foam eyecup that seals the gap between the frame and your face. As I reported earlier, this system does a great job of protecting your eyes from the wind. The OSS is vented and the lenses have an anti-fog coating to help—well, prevent—fogging. What is special about the Convertible is that the OSS is removable. It snaps easily off and on. I always felt a bit geekie wearing my Panoptx in non-sports situations, like around the pool or driving, because of the OSS. But now I just pop it out and I have a great looking pair of high-end sunglasses.

Another improvement skaters will appreciate is the greater vertical range of vision than earlier models. Previous pairs I've tested have a restricted forward view when I'm in a tuck position. The new Convertible provides good forward vision even in a deep tuck. Switching to two wheels, they are the first Panoptx I've been able to comfortably wear on my road bike.

I put my new Panoptx to the test at Alpine Meadows Ski Area last weekend on a cool windy day. My first run was a 40 mph screamer down Alpine Bowl with a 20-30 mph cross-wind. Non-stop to the lift with no tears! Amazing!

These are definitely my favorite sports sunglasses of all time. Check 'em out. Panoptx
