2014 Events and Travels

Skiing in a low snow year

  • Despite the drought, we had decent skiing. We finished off the season as usual with a trip to Mammoth Mountain, which means we got to drive through Yosemite twice.
  • Dan was feeling deprived by the Tahoe area snow conditions, so he booked a helicopter ski trip at Revelstoke. Liz couldn't go.
  • Meanwhile, our Springtime garden looked glorious before the summer heat and a failed sprinkler system dried things out.

Family news

  • Magical Weekend With Dad  captures Liz's images of an active father-daughter weekend. Jerry cooked up his first-ever guest feast.
  • Grandson Chase graduated at the top of his high school class. We attended his party in New Jersey, then explored Brooklyn.
  • Nephew Monte Miller got married to Bradyn Blower on July 27. What a fun party, and boy can brother John do western swing!

Backpacking in the Sierras

  • We hiked Ten Lakes Basin with Anna, one of the few and favorite playmates who can keep up. ;-) She also makes every minute of every day fun!
  • Weekend Trip to Tyler Lake has photos from one of our favorite bushwhack hikes over the mountain ridges.
  • We had time to spend a Week in the Rae Lakes Basin in the High Sierras. What gorgeous country!

Biking

  • Liz and Dan biked together with Team Chevron on several weekends, getting stronger, fitter and leaner every month.
  • We car-camped and biked through beautiful Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, and tasted wines at Foresight and Elke wineries.
  • In mid December, Liz's bike odometer showed 3000 miles ridden since her wobbly, terrified start at Christmas 2012.
  • Liz documented her progress on the road bike in her Fitness/Biking Blog:

Pine tree sculpture   Property Management by Don Miller
Don's experience and unflagging attention to detail was invaluable as he oversaw several projects and contractors in 2014:
  • Sungevity Solar Panel Installation (what a dramatic change to our electric bill!)
  • Tree removal with bear sculpture (see Don's video)
  • New property-line fence
  • Sprinkler replacement (we were losing more plants than could be blamed on the drought)
  • Household systems documentation and metrics
  • Pest control plan (termites and roof rats!)
  • Comfort care for Whitney's last days
